The Sceptre Press Talk at Cadbury Research Library

The Sceptre Press, founded in the 1960s by poet and writer Martin Booth, published previously unpublished works by poets including Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney and Sylvia Plath.  In this talk Martin Killeen, Rare Books Librarian at the Cadbury Research Library, will shed light on the interesting work of this little known press, followed by the opportunity to view and handle the elegant slim volumes produced by the press as well as typescripts and letters from Martin Booth’s archive.

Using Twitter as a Postgraduate Researcher

Social media is everywhere, so why not use it to your advantage? More than just a tool to keep in touch with friends or to look at pictures of kittens, social media can be used for research, business and personal gain. This talk will introduce Twitter (as an example of social media) to the beginner, and introduce ways in which the tool can be used in information dissemination and collation, to keep up to date with research, and as a forum among academics in similar fields. It will also highlight the pitfalls, so keenly exaggerated by the media, and how to avoid them.

BBC Head of Science Talk For Ph.D. Students

The BBC’s Head of Science, Andrew Cohen

(http://eandt.theiet.org/magazine/2011/05/interview-andy-cohen.cfm) is visiting the University next week, and will be giving a talk for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers at 4.15pm on Tuesday 26^th June. This is a great opportunity to hear more about media careers and opportunities from someone with a science background (Andrew has a degree in Physiology and Pharmacology) who has spent a long time helping to overlap those interests with arts and humanities at a national level. There will hopefully be plenty of opportunity to quiz him after the talk with any burning questions you have.
